HONOR MEMORIAL DAY... REMEMBER THOSE FROM AHS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES.
We honor those from Alhambra High School who served our country and paid the ultimate sacrafice. Ensign John Charles England was an officer in the United States Navy and aboard the USS Oklahoma when it was torpedoed. The circumstances surrounding his death were heoric. Born in Harris, Missouri on December 11, 1920, England was first raised in Oklahoma City and moved to Alhambra, California in his youth. He and his sister Lennie England (Bemiss) attended Alhambra High School. In 1938 he was elected president of his graduating class. In high school, he was a member of the "Light and Shadow" drama club, acted in a senior play, and Senior Hi-Y, among his many extra curricular activities. After the attack, England refused to abandon ship, and proceeded to go below deck to rescue his shipmates. He did so three times - but did not return on the 4th. England was awarded a Purple Heart and is the namesake of two Navy vessels.
