Information about Homework

The Alhambra Unified School District, under the direction of the Governing Board, recognizes that homework is an important part of a student’s high school education.

Homework contributes toward building:

  • Responsibility
  • Self-discipline
  • Habits that support life-long learning

Homework is to be viewed as:

  • Part of a routine and
  • An important part of students’ daily lives

Homework assignments are to reinforce learning objectives in a meaningful way.

Homework

Directly influences students’ ability to meet district and state academic standards.

It is the responsibility of each student to complete homework assignments.  Teachers are expected to use parents/guardians as a contributing resource.

Time Spent on Homework

It is expected that students will spend a reasonable amount of time on homework assignments each night.  The time should be sufficient to fulfill the purposes of the assignments and should balance out to approximately thirty minutes per subject per day.  The time spent will vary according to students’ academic class load, the demands of each discipline, and the student’s time management and organizational skills.  Exams and projects will likely demand more time when assigned.

Honors and Advanced Placement Courses:

Students are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking Honors or Advanced Placement courses in academic subjects.  These are rigorous courses and homework expectations in these courses are greater than those in grade level courses.  Therefore, it is imperative that students choosing to take these courses plan additional time for reading, research and writing at an advanced level.

Teacher Responsibilities

Homework is assigned to reinforce learning after the teacher has checked for understanding.

Assignments should be well planned and directly related to standards for the course and the skills learned.

Assignments will be checked, graded or reviewed in a timely manner.

Balance the homework load across the week and throughout the school year.

Parent Responsibilities

Provide a comfortable, quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

Provide guidance and monitoring in time management, organizational skills and study habits.

Take an active interest in courses and assignments.

Check Parent Portal frequently to keep appraised of progress.

Communicate with the counselor and teachers.
